David, a man in his twenties who suffers from bipolar disorder and takes care of his quadriplegic mother, lives a life dulled by medication. His days flit by in Portland while his sister finishes her psychiatric residency in Seattle. When David meets Helena, an unmedicated bipolar woman, she introduces him to the Dangerous Gifts Society—a mix of AA and revolutionary coffeehouse that insists mental illness is an aptitude. He goes off his meds and falls euphorically in love with Helena, but struggles to control the ecstasy he feels and risks losing his family forever.
